Q: What is the meaning of the word “Shanku”?

Ans: Shanku is the equipment to measure the shadow of the sun. This is such type of equipment with the help of which the ray of the rising and setting sun can be identified and then remaining directions can be ascertained. Shanku is measured equal to 12 fingers. If the shadow is to measure then the Shanku will have to be set at the center place of the land. If it is not possible then some other good places may be selected. Shanku of different sizes is made of different materials. This may be made of teeth of elephant, chandan (Sandal) timber or general timber of good quality. Measurement of ideal Shanku and system of setting are given below in the picture.
